Drones - Traditional Image Acquisition

Traditional image acquisition sources are satellite imagery and manned aircraft aerial photography where both methods have benefits and weaknesses depending on the requirements of the user. Satellite imagery tends to be not very recent but basically you can take imagery anywhere you want. For manned aircraft aerial photography, time will be required for obtaining permission and coordination of pilot and photographer. Manned aircraft will have the advantage being closer to the area of interest. Satellite imagery covers a large area and usually has a resolution up to 50cm while manned aircraft aerial photography can have a resolution up to 10cm depending on the flying altitude and the camera they use. Both methods are dependent on local weather condition, cloudy weather will certainly obscure the image acquisition process. Most importantly, both methods are expensive and lengthy process.

With the emergence of inexpensive and light digital camera and image processing technique, aerial photography is now possible on small unmanned aircraft system(SUAS). The noticeable benefits of SUAS are shown below:

  • Image acquisition at the instance you want. It is not limited to the lengthy image acquisition planning and coordination.
  • Less weather dependency. SUAS can be deployed even in cloudy condition where the flying altitude can be adjusted below the cloud.
  • Operational in hostile environment. In case of emergency, rain, snow, fog, or rough terrain will not stop SUAS from obtaining valuable geographical information. There will be safety concern is manned aircraft is deployed.
  • Less restriction. SUAS is operational without airspace if certain requirements are fulfill such as within visual range and low altitude flight.
  • High resolution image. Low altitude flying where SUAS is closer to the area of interest allows the ground sample distance up to 5cm.

There are several principles for a quality images acquisition:
Forward Overlap: 60% - 80%
Side Overlap: 15% - 60%
Image Tilt Angle: Less than 5°, maximum 12°

The flight performances of our UAV easily satisfy all the principles required to obtain the quality images. With our advanced autopilot system, the attitude of the UAV is capable to maintain within 5°.

Aerial Mapping Unmanned Aircraft System

Our Aerial Mapping UAS revolutionized photogrammetry by moving the photograph collection from the hand of photogrammetric expert to those of field personnel. Obtaining aerial photograph is no longer a lengthy, complicated and expensive process with the emergence of our aerial mapping unmanned aircraft system. People of different profession can now easily obtain their aerial photograph whenever or wherever they want. UAVER provides different classes of proven small unmanned aircraft system and total solution of 3D map reconstruction to fulfill customers’ needs.

How it Works

Autonomous Flight

Fully autonomous is certainly the most interesting feature in our aerial mapping system. Once the UAV is launched, it will fly along it’s designated flight path and take the aerial photographs. Once mission is accomplished, It will fly back to the designated landing point and deploy the parachute. The deployment of parachute allow the UAV to land in tougher terrain.

Simple & Easy

Our aerial mapping system is very user friendly and designed for the non-professional remote pilot. It is simple and ready to be deployed in a fully autonomous way. It requires minimum or no training at all, user simply need to go through our complete operating manual. After conducting the step-by-step preflight system check, it can be launched from a supporting equipment through the bungee cord, without risking the operating personnel. Ground control software featuring with a very user friendly interface. Software interface is occupied by a large portion of map, making the flight planning clear and accurate. Navigation waypoints or flight area could be created by simple clicking actions. Besides that, warning message will pop out to prevent user making the wrong setting and ensure the safety of the unmanned aerial vehicle.

Image Processing

Each of the acquired aerial photograph will have a position and orientation data (POS data). The photographs will be orthorectified according to the POS data and combined to produce a geo-referenced orthophoto mosaic. Orthophotos can be further processed to generate Digital Elevation Model (DEM). UAVER provides different software depending on the requirements of the user.

The generated orthophoto mosaic and DEM can have a resolution up to 5cm of ground sample distance(GSD), depending on the flying altitude, digital camera and photograph overlapping. The accuracy, depends on the GPS of the UAV, typically at the range of 2m without ground control points(GCP). It is a trade off between accuracy and the burden of measuring ground control points. User can obtain the accuracy up to 5cm with the presence of GCPs.

In order to comply with the rules and regulation of a country and fulfill the needs of the users, Carbon-Based Technology provides a variety of customization services. Customization includes customization of payloads (desired digital camera) which are within weight limit, data link communication, or software interface (map or functions).
